Why Kids Yoga Matters (And Why Consistency Is Key)

By Jackie Bravo, Co-Founder of Sol Space, mom of two, and former pediatric therapist.

When parents hear the word “yoga,” they often picture dim lights, quiet music, and deep breathing on a mat. Now imagine that—but with giggles, storytime, animal poses, and maybe a yoga mat fort or two. Welcome to kids yoga.

As a mom, yoga teacher, and former therapist of seven years at Chicago Pediatric Therapy and Wellness Center, I’ve seen the powerful benefits of yoga for children—especially when it’s practiced consistently.

🧘‍♀️ So… Why Yoga for Kids?

Kids live in a busy world. They’re constantly growing, learning, and navigating big feelings in little bodies. Yoga meets them right where they are. It teaches children:

  • How to breathe through frustration

  • How to move with intention

  • How to notice their bodies and emotions

  • How to rest

And the best part? They learn all of this through movement, music, art, storytelling, and play. Yoga gives kids tools they’ll carry with them into school, friendships, sports, and life.

🎨 Wait, This Is Yoga?

Yes. It’s yoga. But not like what you’re used to.

A typical class might include:

  • Animal poses and silly sounds 🐍

  • Storytime with breath breaks 📖

  • Crafts and coloring with affirmations 🎨

  • Freeze dance with yoga shapes 🕺

We don’t expect kids to sit still and stretch for 45 minutes. We encourage movement, curiosity, and expression. It’s developmentally appropriate, fun, and evidence-informed.

🗓️ Why Consistency Matters

Just like brushing teeth or learning to ride a bike, the benefits of yoga build over time. One class is fun. A few classes are memorable. But ongoing weekly practice?

That’s where we see:

  • Improved self-regulation

  • Better sleep

  • Increased strength and flexibility

  • Confidence in their bodies and voice

Yoga becomes part of their rhythm—a safe space to move, express, and be themselves.

💛 A Space Made for You and Your Child

At Sol Space, we know how much parents juggle. That’s why we made our kids yoga classes drop-off friendly, so you can take a moment for yourself while your child connects with their body in a joyful, screen-free environment.

Our classes are led by me, Jackie Bravo—a mom of two boys, co-founder of Sol Space, and someone who’s been in the therapy room with hundreds of Chicago families. I understand sensory needs, attention challenges, and the beauty of neurodiversity. These classes are crafted with care, clinical insight, and creativity.

✨ Join the Movement

Whether your child is shy or spirited, yoga meets them where they are. It’s not about mastering a pose—it’s about feeling good in your body and building emotional resilience one breath at a time.

We’d love to welcome your little one to the mat. And if you ever have questions or suggestions, our door is always open. This space is for you.

Let’s grow together. One wobbly tree pose at a time. 🌳
