Collective Healing During Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

Honoring Winter, Holding Hope

Life can change in an instant. On August 12, 2016, our hearts broke when we lost our son Winter at 39 weeks. 💔 Stillbirth leaves an imprint forever, one that shapes you in ways words can barely hold. Our path to parenthood was not what we imagined — miscarriages, IUI, IVF. It felt endless. Exhausted, we chose to surrender.

During the quiet of lockdown in Spring 2020, I found yoga. It became my sanctuary — a place where I could grieve, release, and finally begin to heal. 🌱 Then in June 2021, joy returned: I gave birth to my son Rain, at the age of 42. 😭 Today, Winter would be 9 years old. I carry him in my heart always, and sharing his story feels important — to honor his life, to raise awareness, and to offer hope.

Surrender does not mean defeat. Sometimes, it opens doors we never imagined.

October: Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month

Each October, families across the world honor Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month — a time to remember the babies gone too soon, and the families carrying invisible grief.

The reality is sobering:

  • In the United States, 1 in 4 pregnancies ends in miscarriage.

  • About 1 in 160 pregnancies ends in stillbirth.

  • Every year, tens of thousands of families face the unimaginable — losing their baby before, during, or shortly after birth.

Behind every number is a story, a family, and a love that never fades.

The host, Room to Heal: Compassion in Action

After experiencing her own pregnancy loss in 2024, Chicago mom Justine founded Room to Heal, a nonprofit created to support families facing the often invisible weight of loss. She knows firsthand how overwhelming it can feel to live among baby items — clothes, toys, and nursery spaces — that once held so much hope.

Room to Heal was born from her belief that healing begins when we are gently supported in reclaiming our physical space. As Executive Director, Justine leads a team of volunteers who walk alongside families as they decide whether to store, donate, or thoughtfully part with items — in their own time, and in their own way.

Her mission is simple but powerful: to ease the burden of grief by helping families take one small, compassionate step toward healing.
