What Is a Sculpt Class? A Beginner’s Guide

New to sculpt classes in Chicago? A sculpt class is a high-energy, music-driven workout that blends strength training, cardio, and mindful movement, think body weight, high reps, and a flow that keeps you moving. At Sol Space in Jefferson Park, our Sculpt classes are beginner-friendly, modifiable for every body, and set to playlists that make the hour fly.

Why we call it Sculpt, not "Yoga Sculpt"

You'll notice we don't call it "yoga sculpt." That's intentional, and it matters to us.

Yoga carries a lineage, hundreds, even thousands of teachers who have sacredly practiced its postures and philosophy across generations. We don't get to take yoga and do whatever we want with it. Yoga is a lot of things, but borrowing its name for a workout it isn't would be colonizing something that deserves respect.

Sculpt, on the other hand, is its own thing. It has its own idea, its own flow, and most people know exactly what it is. So that's what we call it: Sculpt. Honest, clear, and respectful of both traditions.

What actually happens in a Sculpt class

Every Sculpt class at Sol Space follows a simple, satisfying arc:

Warm-up. We start with dynamic movement to wake up the muscles and get your heart rate up, no cold starts, no surprises.

Strength circuits. This is the core of the class: high repetitions, and compound movements that target arms, legs, glutes, and core. You'll move through focused sets, think squats with overhead presses, lunges with bicep curls, plank variations, all timed to the music.

Cardio bursts. Short intervals of higher-intensity movement (jacks, mountain climbers, quick footwork) woven between the strength sets to keep your heart rate elevated.

Core finisher. We always close the working portion with dedicated core work — because a strong center supports everything else you do, on and off the mat.

Cool down and stretch. We end the way every good workout should: slowing down, stretching out, and letting your body land. You'll leave sweaty, stretched, and weirdly energized.

A typical class runs about 60 minutes. The room is warm, the music is up, and the vibe is encouraging, challenging, never intimidating.

What to bring (and what we provide)

Show up with yourself, a water bottle, and clothes you can move and sweat in. That's genuinely it.

We provide mats, water, tea, and cold towels for the end of class.

Is Sculpt good for beginners?

Yes, it's one of the best places to start. Here's why:

Everything is modifiable. Our instructors demo low-impact and lighter options for every sequence. New to lunges? We'll show you a version that works. Need to skip the cardio bursts? Totally fine.

You set the pace. There's no keeping up with the person next to you. Take a breather whenever you need one, nobody's counting your reps but you.

You'll build real strength fast. Because Sculpt uses high reps beginners often feel a difference within a few weeks: everyday things like carrying groceries, climbing stairs, and sitting tall at a desk get easier.

If you're working around an injury or a medical condition, check with your doctor first, then let your instructor know before class, we'll help you modify.

FAQ

What is a sculpt class?

A sculpt class is a music-driven workout combining strength training (light weights, high reps), cardio intervals, and a cool-down stretch. It's its own fitness format — energetic and effective, distinct from yoga.

Why doesn't Sol Space call it "yoga sculpt"?

Out of respect for yoga's lineage. Yoga is a sacred practice carried by generations of teachers, and we don't believe in borrowing its name for something it isn't. Sculpt is its own idea with its own flow, so that's what we call it.

Do I need experience to take a Sculpt class?

No. Sculpt at Sol Space is beginner-friendly, with modifications offered for every sequence and instructors who help you pick the right weights.

What should I wear to a Sculpt class?

Clothes you can move and sweat in, and supportive athletic shoes or bare feet — whatever you're comfortable with. Bring a water bottle; we provide weights and mats.

How much does it cost to try Sculpt at Sol Space?

Our 30 Days Unlimited intro is $69 for a full month of unlimited classes — Sculpt, yoga, and Zumba included.
